GDPR compliance in Abandoned Cart Plugins

Abandoned Cart for WooCommerce

We all know that Abandoned Cart Plugins capture user data to track and log abandoned carts while helping the site admin to recover lost sales.

Our plugin also does the same. It provides the site admin the option to capture carts abandoned by registered users as well as guest users.

The below changes have been done in both the LITE version as well as the PRO version of the plugin.

Changes done in Abandoned Cart Pro 7.9.1 Version are as follows:

Display Messages informing users of data being captured

To ensure compliance, we have now added the ability for the site admin to display messages at different places on the website to make sure the end user is aware of what data is captured and how is it used.

Abandoned Cart Settings

While it is the site admin’s responsibility to update the site’s Privacy Policy to detail the data captured and used, the plugin provides the ability to display any message the site admin deems fit to indicate to the users that data is being captured and logged.

The messages added in the settings above will be displayed as below for registered users and guest users.

Registered Users

For registered users on the site, the message is displayed on both the Shop page as well as the Product page.

Similarly, the same message is displayed on the Product page below the Add to Cart button as well.

Guest Users

For guest users, the plugin captures data on either the ‘Add to Cart pop-up’ or the Checkout page. So here as well, the plugin has provided the site admin the option to display a suitable message to the users.

Export/Erase Personal Data captured by the plugin

WordPress v4.9.6 now provides the ability to site users to export and erase personal data from the site for a given email address. Our Abandoned Cart plugin now hooks into this functionality to export and erase the personal data captured by the plugin for a given user.

Export Data

The personal data collected by the plugin for registered users as well as guest users is available for export using the WordPress Dashboard->Tools->Export Personal Data feature introduced by WordPress. The plugin hooks into the WordPress filters and adds the custom filter to export personal data for the said user.

Erase Data

The personal data collected by the plugin for registered users as well as guest users is erased using the WordPress Dashboard->Tools->Erase Personal Data feature introduced by WordPress. The plugin hooks into the WordPress filters and adds the custom filter to erase personal data for the said user thereby ensuring compliance.
